How to negotiate successfully in Brazil
Brazil
Remember that...
Brazil is the third economic emerging power after China and India. Brazilian companies usually maintain a high level of professionalism and seriousness which clashes with the country’s stereotype image of “carnival and samba” that may have all those countries that do not know the Brazilian sociocultural and economic reality. It must be remembered that it is one of the few countries in the world that has its own aeronautics industry.
Negotiation tips
  • The pace of work and decision-making differs from one area to another: the Paulistas (São Paulo is the main business centre) are similar to Anglo-Saxon executives, whereas the Cariocas (Río de Janeiro) behave more like any other Latin American executive.
  • In initial interviews Brazilians do not give many details and may even give confusing information; they expect the other party to do the same until some degree of trust has been achieved. The negotiation process is slow.
  • The Brazilian business culture is individualist and hierarchical. Decisions are usually taken by one person, the senior manager.
Etiquette tips
  • Brazilians regard themselves as Americans. You should not call them “Latin Americans” or “South Americans” and, least of all, “Spanish”. Nor should you use the expression “in America” when referring to the United States.
