| Frenchmen conquered Algeria in 1830 and they controled the country for more than one century by imposing their culture and religion and limiting Muslims’ citizenship rights. After the World War I , several nationalist movements arose and in 1954 these movements declared the independence war against France. After eight years and around 1.5 millions deaths, the FNL (National Liberation Front) headed by the colonel Houri Boumedienne, imponed upon the French army of the general Charles de Gaulle. In 1962 most part of the French population –so‐called “pieds noirs” (black feet) because of the boots color of the French soldiers posted in Algeria‐, Catholics and Jewish left the country |

Negotiation tips
- It is not easy to find potential clients or distributors in Algeria since there is not much information on this. To have access to this market it is advisable to attend to the multi‐sector International Fair of Algiers held annually every June in the capital‐, or any recent fair
specialized in sectors such as the faro machinery or construction.
- For imports, it is a must to work with companies registered in the Import Office. Although there is a high number of registered companies (around 25,000) only a reduced number of them control imports there is a monopoly.
- Algeria cannot be considered as a homogeneous country; there are different regions with different features: Algiers, where Arab and Western culture converge; Oran, with more Western influence; Kabil, in the North, more tradicional; and Tamanrasset, in the South (Central Sahara), where enterprises are controlled by families.

- The most common form of greeting, for both men and women, is shaking hands. When there is familiarity, they hug or kiss on the cheek.
