How to Negotiate and Doing business in Australia |
|
 |
| Remember that... |
|
In Australia you should try to be friendly and natural. Australians do care for people who try to impress, show off or think that they are in any way superior. The expression “a fair go”, used in the sense of giving everyone the same opportunities, reflects the egalitarian spirit of this society.

Negotiation tips
- Due to the time, distance and cost and involved in getting to Australia, all the pros and cons should be carefully considered before the decision to travel is taken.
- Access to the market is usually via an importer-distributor –very often the same company does both things–. Distribution companies usually cover one region (no more than two states). In the negotiation with the distributor a key aspect, which they will request, is exclusivity for their area.
- Australians like to investigate potential suppliers or partners. It is highly likely that before the first meeting they will ask for business reports on the foreign company that they are going to negotiate with. The American consultancy Dun & Bradstreet is frequently used for this purpose.

Etiquette tips
- The usual greeting is shaking hands with the informal “Good day” (pronounced guday). Women usually shake hands. A kiss on the cheek is only for friends.
