How to Negotiate and Doing business in Belgium
Doing business in Belgium
Remember that...
Belgium is a small, sophisticated country, replete with potential partners who, like the Belgian-born actress Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, are amongst the most eligible and attractive around. Success in Belgium calls for the highest level of skilled negotiation.
Negotiation tips
  • It is a mistake to think that Belgium is an extension of the French market. It needs a different penetration policy and business strategy. It will be easier to reach other countries from Belgium –Holland, Germany, Luxembourg, and even France– rather than the other way round.
  • Business management is easy, since most of the large manufacturing and distribution companies are concentrated in Brussels, and from here there are excellent road and railway connections with the other economic centres in the country.
  • In presentations you should use facts, figures and graphs. They like to get straight to the point. Trying to “sell concepts or ideas” is no good. It is better that the facts speak for themselves.
Etiquette tips
  • Although Belgians are friendly, the business environment is formal. First names are not used, except among friends. Before the surname you must put Dhr or Mevr in Flemish, and Monsieur or Madame when speaking French.
