How to Negotiate and Doing business in Canada
Doing business in Canada
Remember that...

Canada is a country with two cultures and two languages. The French arrived first (1534), but they lost the war against the English (1760). The gap between the two communities still exists today. The Québecois Party still demands sovereignty for Quebec. This matter should be understood, but not mentioned.

Negotiation tips
  • Canada can be divided into five trade regions: Ontario (approximately 45% of the market), Quebec (20%), British Columbia (15%), The Prairies (15%) and the Atlantic Provinces (5%).
  • The distribution of industrial products is dominated by a very small number of companies which are geographically concentrated. Consumer products are sold via importers-distributors who have exclusivity in the region.
  • All promotional literature (leaflets, catalogue, cards, etc.) should be written both in English and French. Labels on products and instruction manuals must be in both languages.
Etiquette tips
  • The most usual form of greeting is shaking hands, standing upright. A man must wait for a woman to hold out her hand first.
