How to Negotiate and Doing business in Colombia
Doing business in Colombia
Remember that...
Colombia is the most well-mannered country in Latin America where the language and forms of traditional Spanish are best preserved. You should use a low tone of voice, avoid rude expressions and behave in a polite and friendly manner.
Negotiation tips
  • Unlike other Latin American countries business activity is not only concentrated in the capital. As well as Bogotá, Medellín and Calí in the interior, Cartagena and Barranquilla on the Atlantic coast are important business centres.
  • Personal contacts are essential for business success in Colombia. The business world is dominated by a closed social class whose members maintain a close relationship with each other. It is difficult to gain access to this circle if you are not introduced by someone in it. The division between social classes is very rigid; there is very little social mobility.
  • Foreign products are distributed by distributors-importers. Only a small number of them, the largest, have national coverage. The figure of a commercial agent does not exist and is replaced by the representative.
Etiquette tips
  • The form of greeting for men and women is shaking hands, although not vigorously. Women may be given a kiss when it is not the first meeting.
