How to Negotiate and Doing business in Costa Rica
Doing business in Costa Rica
Remember that...
Due to the presence of a large number of diminutives, Costa Rica inhabitants are colloquially called “ticos” (“ticas” for women ) , and no t “costarricenses” (this is the correct one) when talking in Spanish. When talking in English, the word “ricans” should be avoided since it has got negative connotations. “Ticos” or “costaricans” are commonly used.
Negotiation tips
  • It is not difficult to have access to Costarican enterprises. Once in the country, interviews can be arranged few days in advance. It is usual to be received by a second level executive.
  • There exists a reduced group of executives with family connections and influence with the Government –they act as a lobby‐. For important business they should be contacted.
  • The international experience and solvency of middlemen (in case an agent or wholesaler is needed) should be tested since they could say they have got certain contacts or activity they do not really have.
Etiquette tips
  • Costa Rica follows a more formal and strict etiquette than other Caribbean countries with more informal customs –even in the business environment.
