How to Negotiate and Doing business in Ecuador
Doing business in Ecuador
Remember that...

In Ecuador the regional differences between those who live in the mountains in and around Quito and those who live on the coast in Guayaquil are very important when doing business. The former are the social elite of the country: they are more conservative, formal and reserved in their dealings. The latter are more entrepreneurial, open to new business ideas, more flexible and relaxed in their attitudes.

Negotiation tips
  • To do business in Ecuador, especially in Quito, it is necessary to have the right contacts. It will be difficult to gain access if you do not have the help of a local company. Import-export agencies and law firms can be useful.
  • Business appointments must be arranged two weeks in advance and confirmed two or three days before.
  • Ecuadorians like to talk a lot. Before starting to do business you should devote time to small talk, and chat about the journey, culture, country, etc. Even during the business conversations they are likely to add comments, anecdotes or personal experiences that are not directly related to the issue under discussion.
Etiquette tips
  • Punctuality is not one of the country’s characteristics. A delay of fifteen or twenty minutes is considered normal (this is what is called “Ecuadorian time”). They do not usually apologise for it.
