How to Negotiate and Doing business in Estonia
Doing business in Estonia
Remember that...
The Estonian culture represents the meeting point between the eastern and western Europe. However, the country remained for several centuries under the influence of Germany, Denmark, Poland, Sweden and Russia. In spite of this occupation, Estonia has managed to preserve its language and its cultural heritage. In this way the main emblematic symbols are music— with composers such as Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis and Erkki‐Sven Tüür– and song festivals.
Negotiation tips
  • Estonian people are considered to be individualistic, honest and frank. They are executives that easily carry out an agreement. In spite of their honesty, they act with caution so that negotiators do not feel offended.
  • Estonians prefer face to face contact and professional relations derived from friendship. Once the friendship is established, they can talk business. For this reason it is required plenty of time to close dealings. In this sense many lunches and dinners are scheduled to get to know one another.
  • Although Estonians mix pleasure with business, meetings are arranged in a formal environment, since they do not trust in the unreliable attitudes of foreigners. In business situations they are really serious and keep good manners. Patience, cordiality and good image are essential aspects to start stable relations in the long term.
Etiquette tips
  • The most common form of greeting, for both men and women, is a firm handshake while saying the name of the person looking at his/ her eyes. Kisses on the cheeks are only given when there is a great friendship.
