How to Negotiate and Doing business in Finland |
|
 |
| Remember that... |
|
In Finland, the national pastime is the sauna. There are one and a half million saunas for just over five million inhabitants. Usually, once a business deal has been closed it is celebrated with an informal lunch followed by a sauna. It is one of the few places where Finnish people are relaxed and forget the pressures of work.

Negotiation tips
- Finland is a highly homogeneous and limited market. However, its high purchasing power and the cordial relationship that it enjoys with the Baltic countries and Russia mean that it is more interesting than it might appear. Because of its geographical position, it is considered an important logistical centre for the north of Europe and even the Far East.
- At business meetings you do not have to devote much time to preambles. In fact, no one is offended if you get straight to the point, and the negotiation finishes very quickly. However, praising the scenery or making some comment about the weather will not go amiss.
- Words are really important for Finns. They prefer people who do not speak very much but who keep their word, to those who use lots of rhetoric but with little content. They have a saying that expresses this very well: “You can tell a man by his words, a bull by his horns”.

Etiquette tips
- A firm and brief handshake is the usual greeting between men and women. When you greet a group of people you should shake hands first with the women out of politeness, but it is unlikely that anyone will be offended if you greet the person nearest to you first.
