How to Negotiate and Doing business in Hungary |
|
 |
| Remember that... |
|
Hungarians are the most homogenous race in the Danube valley, in the middle of an ocean of Germans and Slavs. Their proverbial pride is the result of their ancient origin (the Magyars arrived in Central Europe from the Urals in the ninth century), a unique language that is distantly related to Finnish, and a history of grandness and power. The national hero and symbol of Magyar nationalism is Louis Kossuth, a politician and orator who led the insurrection against the Austrians in 1848.

Negotiation tips
- The Hungarian character is rather more relaxed and less rigid than that of its German, Austrian and Slav neighbours. They believe that they are more similar to Mediterranean people.
- Distribution channels are changing. Small and medium-size companies are losing position to foreign multinationals that are changing Hungarian consumer habits via large distribution.
- The most persuasive sales arguments are the ability to introduce new products into the local supply and the expertise to improve the business management systems.

Etiquette tips
- The business culture is formal. They are very polite, serious and punctual. You must use the title Doctor, Director, Professor, etc. followed by the surname. If you do not know the title, use Mr or Mrs. First names are only used among friends.
