How to Negotiate and Doing business in Indonesia
Doing business in Indonesia
Remember that...

Indonesia is perhaps the most difficult country in which to do business in South-East Asia: political instability, high financial risk, corruption, difficulties getting about in the capital, etc. It is the exact opposite of the atmosphere peace and tranquillity that you enjoy as a tourist on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Negotiation tips
  • Senior executives and managers in Indonesian companies tend to be more accessible than in other Asian countries. They usually attend the first meeting with managers from foreign companies.
  • Punctuality is a privilege that comes with status. The concept of time is very flexible as expressed by the local term jam karet (“rubber time”). It is only in large companies where you have to arrange an appointment several days before.
  • In order to get to the right people, speed up decision-making and ensure that business deals are successfully concluded, you will have to be prepared to spend extra amounts that can be budgeted and justified as “consulting fees”.
Etiquette tips
  • Indonesian names are very complicated. In introductions you must take time to learn how to pronounce them correctly and never make jokes about their meaning or sound, since they are sacred for most Indonesians.
