How to Negotiate and Doing business in Iran |
|
 |
| Remember that... |
| Iran (the old P e r s i a ) shows vestiges of human occupation and cultural remains from the Stone Age. The country evokes the image of a territory that links Asia with the western civilization, earth with heaven (represented by its famous stone, the turquoise). Persia was one of the biggest empires of the Old World. It has always maintained its own cultural identity in the Islamic world and its own language and ethnic singularity. |

Negotiation tips
- Iran protects a lot its industry. There are strong tariff restrictions (customs duty ranking from 50% to 200%) and non‐tariff restrictions on imports. This is one of the few important countries that does not belong to the WTO (because of the US veto).
- Those companies wishing to invest in Iran, to carry out projects or to participate in a public bidding process are obliged to have a local partner as well as the 51% of the capital of the society in construction.
- The official language is Persian or Farsi, very different to Arabic. The language for business is English. However, those companies with not much experience in foreign trade can speak little English. In this case you would require an interpreter.

Etiquette tips
- The most common form of greeting is a handshake. With women you must avoid any kind of physical contact since it is not allowed by the Islamic laws.
