How to Negotiate and Doing business in Kenya
Doing business in Kenya
Remember that...
K e n y a , became a Sovereign State in 1963 after five hundred years under Arab, Portuguese and British rule. The first President of the Country, Jomo Kenyatta, Leader of the Independence and National hero, coined the expression Harambee (“all together”) which is a kind of National Slogan and the answer to it in crowded celebrations is Nay (“follow the steps”). The objective of this message is to promote a feeling of patriotism among Kenyans rather than becoming members of ethnic groups or tribes (Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Kalemjin, Kamba, Meru, etc).
Negotiation tips
  • Kenya maintain a lot of traditions of a tribal country of bantu origin, mainly. Personal relationships are very important as well as the ethnic groups. Kenyans, when they meet for the first time, they include in their introduction the ethnic group of which they are members.
  • There are nearly forty tribes. The two most important ones are Kikuyo (22% of the population) of bantu origin that was the one that had more contact with British people and that is very introduced in the Administration and big business groups, and Luo (13%) more introduced in industry and trade unions.
  • In Mombasa and, to a minor extent in Nairobi, there is a great presence of Indians and Arabs in activities of foreign trade and retailer, who maintain their own culture of business.
Etiquette tips
  • The most common form of greeting is a handshake. With women you must avoid any kind of physical contact since it is not allowed by the Islamic laws.
