In Mexico business is slow and the approach is long term. Business relations are based on trust. There is a tendency to postpone matters that are pending. When they are pressurised to do something the Mexicans respond with expressions like ahorita or ahoritita, both meaning “right now” or “this very minute”. However, these words should not be taken literally.
Negotiation tips
  • Mexicans are ostensibly polite and friendly in both personal and professional contexts. Therefore they avoid giving a straight “no”. Although they may think that the proposal is not right, they will say the product is good and has potential in such a huge market. They do not like upset the foreign visitor.
  • Haggling is widely used and takes up time. In the initial offers you should have a wide negotiation margin.
  • Mexican businessmen and senior executives like to show their power by adopting firm positions and giving the sensation that they are sure of their approaches. It is best to accept this power and not challenge them.
Etiquette tips
  • Contrary to what you may think, Mexicans in Mexico City (known as chilangos) are usually very punctual, they even arrive early since they take into account the traffic jams. In other parts of the country they are not as punctual. Jokingly, they use the expression hora americana (American Time) or also pm (puntualidad Mexicana- Mexican punctuality) to indicate their lack of punctuality.
