GDP
Indicator description
Gross domestic product is the sum of gross value added produced by industries or sectors, valued at basic prices, and of the balance of taxes and subsidies on products, which cannot be divided by industry or sector, less financial intermediation services not divided by industry or sector. GDP volume change compared to the same period of the previous year is presented based on unadjusted data.

Adjusted population
Indicator description
The full-scope censuses conducted every ten years show a comprehensive picture of the number and composition of the population. For determining the annual population number in the period between two censuses, the starting point is the population number of the last census (currently the census with the reference date of 1 October 2022), and from this, the population was estimated by using natural increase or decrease data available from the statistics of vital events until 2000. From 2001 international migration is also taken into account.

Unemployment rate
Indicator description
The ratio of unemployed persons to the economically active population of corresponding age. The indicator can be calculated for different age groups, the default is the age group 15–74. Further selected age groups: 15–24, 25–54, 55–74.

Industrial production
Indicator description
We measure changes of industrial production by variations of industrial production values, however the impact of price change is filtered out. We calculate the volume index of production based on comparative prices data of the industrial production value (presented at reference period price levels).

The Weekly Monitor has been renewed
The HCSO Weekly Monitor is replaced by the HCSO Monitor starting 11 October 2023. The interactive collection of figures, available on the HCSO website, continues to inform about the latest domestic and international social and economic trends, at the same time figures of First Releases have been added to the subjects, as such the content of its categories changed to a certain extent.

Snapshots, 2023 – Retail trade
The volume of retail sales in 2023 fell by 7.9% compared to the previous year, with the biggest decline of nearly 20% in automotive fuel stations, while sales volumes in specialized and non-specialized food shops and non-food retailing fell by 4.7% and 6.2% respectively. At the end of June 2023, the number of retail shops was down by 6.4%, or around 7,000 fewer than a year earlier..

In Hungary, 2,423 thousand people were in receipt of a pension or other pension-type benefits in early 2024. Of those eligible, 76% received old-age pension over retirement age.

Quarterly non-financial sector accounts, 4th quarter 2023
Hungary’s GDP reached HUF 19,626 billion in the 4th quarter of 2023. Financial corporations as well as the sector of households and non-profit institutions serving households (NPISHs) were in a net lending, while the remaining sectors in a net borrowing position in this period. The gross saving rate of households and NPISHs came to 22% and their gross investment rate to 7.6%. The gross profit share of non-financial corporations was 45% and their gross investment rate 31%.

HCSO–ingatlan.com-rent index, March 2024
In March 2024, rents continued to rise: nationally they increased by 0.8% and in Budapest by 1.8% in one month. In nominal terms, March rents were 11.7% higher nationally and 12.4% higher in Budapest than in the same period last year, and 101% and 94% higher than in the base period of 2015. The real rent index was 23% higher than the 2015 base nationally and 19% higher in the capital.

Snapshots, 2023 – Labour market
In 2023, while employment grew, the number of unemployed also increased compared to the previous year, with more potentially available labour and fewer vacancies to fill. Despite a significant rise in average gross earnings of 14.2%, the purchasing power of wages fell by 2.9% last year, reflecting the strong increase in the consumer price index.

Snapshots, 2023 – Green economy
A green economy, as a model of organising and developing the economy, aims to reduce environmental risks and to compensate for the scarcity of available natural resources, as one of the priorities aims to increase energy efficiency. According to energy performance certificates issued in 2022 for new and used residential real estate, buildings with the highest energy efficiency were in Győr-Moson-Sopron and Pest Counties as well as Budapest, while the least energy efficient ones in Nógrád, Békés and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok Counties.

Census 2022 – Most important data on settlements
The ‘Most important data on settlements’ application presents the 3155 settlements of Hungary and the 23 districts of the capital city based on the last three censuses (2001, 2011, 2022) with the help of impressive charts. 16 charts illustrate the demographic, educational and labour market characteristics of the population of the settlement, its ethnic and religious composition, the characteristics of households, families and housing conditions. A map can be used to select neighbouring settlements. The data in the charts can be downloaded in a variety of formats or viewed in the Census database.

Snapshots, 2023 – Consumer prices
Inflation, record high back in January, went down month by month in the course of 2023, so consumer prices rose by an annual average of 17.6%. The favourable trend was primarily due to food price rises slowing down – by means of a lessening rate of rise and then a decrease in agricultural and food industry output prices –, energy prices being normalised and the forint exchange rate strengthening, however, a fall in demand owing to the transformation of consumer habits and the impact of the high base also had a part.
