Special customs duties imposed o imports to offset the benefits of subsidies to producers or exporters in the exporting country. Article VI of the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) – now World Trade Organization (WTO) – permits the use of such duties if the importing country can prove that the subsidy would cause injury to domestic industry. Also known as countervailing measures.
